What Is Your Lightning Risk? Calculate Your Score Now!

Lightning is one of nature’s most powerful forces—and it strikes the U.S. millions of times each year. While some properties are naturally at lower risk, others face a much higher probability of being struck, resulting in costly damage, downtime, and even safety hazards.

So how can you determine your property’s lightning risk? We’ve created a simple 1–5 scale (5 being the highest risk) that takes into account both your location and your property’s unique features.

Lightning Risk Factors

Here are some of the most important factors to consider:

  • Lightning density in your state/county – Some areas experience far more lightning strikes annually. For example, Florida and Texas consistently rank at the top of U.S. lightning strike density.
  • Elevation – Properties located on mountains or at higher elevations are more exposed.
  • Height of the structure – Taller buildings and towers are more likely to be struck.
  • Proximity to large bodies of water – Especially near the ocean, lightning activity is typically higher.
  • Solar panels – Solar systems are conductive and can attract lightning, leading to expensive repairs.
  • Metal roofing – Conductive roofing increases vulnerability.

How to Calculate Your Score

  1. Go through each category in the chart
  2. Assign a score of 1 (low), 3 (moderate), or 5 (high) based on your property.
  3. Add your points and divide that number by six (number of categories).

Final Lightning Risk Score:

  • 1-2: Low Risk
  • 3: Moderate Risk
  • 4-5: High Risk

Do You Need Effective Lightning Protection?

If your score is 3 or above, your property faces significant lightning risk. Traditional lightning rods wait for a strike to happen, but the CMCE Lightning Suppression System takes a different approach—it prevents lightning from forming over your property in the first place.

For high-value properties, solar installations, or communities in lightning-prone states, CMCE is the most advanced, proactive solution to protect your investment, reduce downtime, and increase safety.
